Develop Your English is a textbook for upper intermediate to advanced level English language learners (B2/C1) that offers perspectives on world issues alongside opportunities to develop English as an international language. Its innovative approach incorporates a global perspective into the language learning process through a focus on international themes, organised around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Each unit offers authentic texts (spoken and written) and a focus on grammar and vocabulary selected from the texts to examine and review. The interactive tasks that accompany the material encourage systematic vocabulary and language skills development, and invite the reader to communicate about the world, and themselves in the world.

The Social Entrepreneurial Skills Toolkit is designed to support the development of social enterprise and entrepreneurial skills within the higher and further education curriculum. The project aimed to identify the skills, knowledge, and capabilities students requires to fulfil the role of a social entrepreneur and to reflect these within the curriculum.

An audit tool was created that identifies the key knowledge, skills and capabilities that should be included when designing a social enterprise learning experience: the '''Pedagogy of Social Enterprise Model''' (see Section One of the Toolkit). This evidence-based model comprises six key components of learning that should inform social entrepreneurial skill development.

This audit tool will be an asset for course teams, enabling them to assess the currency of their curriculum and support the delivery of needs-led education. The wider toolkit provides valuable resources to support social enterprise delivery as a learning experience.

You can learn more about the project’s methodology and findings in our Final Report.

'''What is the Project about?'''

'''Understanding data: Praxis and Politics''' is a one-year project funded by the EPSRC ( EP/R045178/1) and the HDI+ network.

We live in a datafied society where decisions taken by corporations and governments are increasingly data and algorithm-driven. Whilst data are often said to be ‘collected’ as if pre-existing, thus reflecting reality, the processes through which data are generated and communicated are neither neutral nor devoid of adverse effects. Richterich (2018) reminds us that data are socially constructed and embedded in their structures. Data are political. Therefore we need technical abilities and media literacies weaved into a critical approach to understand the socio-political and cultural mechanisms that affect individuals and groups that find themselves increasingly navigating data-driven system in their daily lives.

'''What are the IDEAs?'''

Inspirations for Digital Engagement Activities (IDEAs) are a collection of ‘recipes’ (templates for activities) devised by members of the UCL Arena and Digital Education teams to help academic staff to foster an independent approach to learning and the ability to monitor one’s progress whether synchronously or asynchronously. Students become more involved and aware in the learning process and active in seeking clarification and support when needed. Through IDEAs, students develop a better understanding of their progress and gain confidence in what they are expected to learn and to what standard.

The activities we propose help to enhance communication between students and teaching staff and peers, particularly to facilitate interaction in a digital learning context. IDEAs are standalone activities that can be adapted to different levels and subject areas; they are embedded in teaching and can be incorporated in session plans.

Each activity includes information on set-up time, preparation needed and suggested resources. We suggest that students are exposed to the activities repeatedly, so that they can familiarise themselves with an active learning approach and gradually gain confidence and refine their understanding of their assessments, the standards required and the rationale behind it.

'''An open-source approach to Linear & Mixed Integer Programming Version 1.0 Julia 1.7.2/JuMP 1.0'''

'''Richard Lusby & Thomas Stidsen'''

'''Introduction'''

Models of many kinds, both physical and mathematical, have been used for centuries, mainly to gain an understanding of the larger system that is modelled. Mathematical models have been applied in natural sciences and technical sciences at least since Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newton. With the advent of the computer, even models that cannot be solved analytically may produce results. In this book, we only consider two specific types of mathematical models: Linear Programming (LP) and Mixed Integer Programming (MIP). Since the world war II, these two types of models have been crucial for planning, and they have been applied widely in many areas. Both model types require model constructors to define decision variables, an objective function, and one or more constraints defining feasibility. Building LP and MIP models, thus builds understanding of the problem. Having an LP or a MIP model enables optimization, which can provide an optimal solution to the model. Recent technological developments have made the two standard techniques of LP and MIP even more powerful and much more accessible. Optimization software, e.g., Gurobi, Cplex and HiGHS, has not only improved dramatically, but computer hardware has also become much faster, not to mention cheaper. Modern open-source programming languages and some of the solvers, HiGHS, have made the price right; they are free. With this book, we hope to make open-source modelling and solver software for mathematical programming more accessible to a wider audience. Therefore, this book is freely available.

https://www.mathcentre.ac.uk:8081/mathseg/

for casual use (no sign up required) and a teachers’ interface at:

https://www.mathcentre.ac.uk:8081/mathsegteacher/teacher.jsp

where (after you sign up) tests may be composed by teachers from the 5000 or so question spaces, in a manner similar to shopping on Amazon (but entirely free). This generates a unique test URL to give to your students and which allows you to monitor your students’ progress. Instructions are given on the entry page.

The system also uses '''question spaces''' that encode the algebraic and pedagogic structure of each question and this is then realised at runtime by choosing randomised parameters (numbers, words, scenarios). Thus each question space generates thousands or millions of questions seen by students, thereby allowing virtually unlimited practice. If a student goes wrong, very full and intelligent feedback (based on common errors i.e. so-called mal-rules) is given with the question’s choice of parameters carried through into all features of the feedback (wording, equations using MathML and diagrams using SVG). This represents a rich learning environment and, being a standard web page, works accessibly on all browsers, PC, Mac or smart phone.

'''PyPSA meets Earth - Energy system modelling for and with the world'''

"PyPSA meets Earth is an independent research initiative focusing on the provision of free and open-source energy transition tools and data. While the initiative started in spring 2021 with an initial focus on Africa, the scope recently broadened to cover other continents, evolving the initiative to its current form of PyPSA meets Earth. The vision is to create useful alternatives to inscrutable closed-source energy system models for industry and research with the aim to improve infrastructure investment decisions that are expected to reach roughly 4 trillion $ globally by 2030.

The continuously growing team currently includes members from 16 institutes in 11 countries and 4 continents and about 10+ core contributors (status 02.05.2022). The members cover a broad spectrum of expertise and have various roles in the initiative; the code team is mainly composed of professors, young researchers and PhD candidates building the tools and data generators, the outreach team is filled with experts in the field of consulting and open energy systems modelling focusing on the growth of the community, and the advisor team includes more professors, research leaders, and professionals supporting the work and creating opportunities. Remarkably, until now (02.05.2022) the initiative received no funds and depends on the motivation of its members. People are welcome to join and lead further developments and studies for a global sustainable open-source energy modelling landscape.

The current model and data activities:

- the provision of a running open-source power system model in Africa (released)

- the development of a global sector-coupled energy system model (prototype ready, 02.05.2022)

- the development of new demand data prediction from high to low spatial resolution (in development)

- the provision of AI algorithm to detect infrastructure assets from satellites (in development)

'''What Is HiGHS?'''

HiGHS is a high performance serial and parallel solver for large-scale sparse linear programming (LP), mixed-integer programming (MIP) and quadratic programming (QP) models developed in C++11, with interfaces to C, C#, FORTRAN, Julia and Python.

HiGHS is freely available under the MIT licence, and is downloaded from Github. Installing HiGHS from source code requires CMake minimum version 3.15, but no other third-party utilities. HiGHS can be used as a standalone executable on Windows, Linux and MacOS. There is a C++11 library which can be used within a C++ project or, via one of the interfaces, to a project written in other languages.

The purpose of this virtual special issue of Regional Studies is to survey some of the key trading zones between regional studies and real estate research.

By drawing together real estate-focused research previously published in the journal, this virtual special issue clarifies the past scope and reflects on the future potential of dialogues between both fields, which to date have broadly come in four different forms:

- regional variation, change and dynamics through the lens of real estate

- how real estate dynamics intersect with other regional processes such as mobility, labour markets and so on

- the regionalisation transpiring out of real estate dynamics

- advancements to our formative understanding of real estate dynamics

Globally there is an on-going debate on which types of policies and programmes are most appropriate to improve human welfare and boost the economies of cities, regions and communities that are lagging behind. Often this debate is framed as a dichotomy between place-based policies on the one hand, and people-based policies on the other.
This Webinar reports on the outcomes of the RSA’s Policy Expo into place-based policy in the 21st Century. The Expo set out to understand those elements that are seen to constitute good practice in place-based policy in the 21st Century by drawing on the published literature, as well as the perspectives of both the academic community and policy makers.
In this webinar featuring an RSA-sponsored new book The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as Epochal Regionalisation, author Xiangming Chen will discuss the book’s framework for understanding the BRI’s large-scale and cross-border regional corridors and sub-corridors that have strong connected impacts on globalization, urbanization and development. He will focus on the Djibouti-Ethiopia development corridor as a complex case illustrating the opportunities and challenges for urban and regional development from combining the local adaptation of China’s Port-Park-City (PPC) mode of development, special zone-based industrialization and trans-border freight logistics within and between Djibouti and Ethiopia.
The Covid-19 pandemic has had a dramatic impact on the tourism sector and constitutes a huge external shock to all European tourism regions. An academic literature on post-pandemic tourism is already beginning to emerge and early contributions are primarily speculative reflections on potential tourism futures, ranging from the dystopian to the transformational. But how does the future of tourism regions in Europe look from when you ask tourism and regional development practitioners?

This webinar presents findings from research on the response of tourism regions in Europe to the pandemic challenge. We have surveyed and interviewed DMOs in six European countries – Italy, Denmark, England, Spain, Sweden and Austria – in order to understand the impact of the pandemic and the responses by public and private tourism stakeholders, also in terms of adjustment of long-term development strategies.

There is growing interest among policy makers in the role of universities in regional development, evidenced by their increasing prominence in the design and implementation of strategies for regional innovation and growth in recent years (for example, Smart Specialisation Strategies).

In response to this there have been numerous attempts to create conceptual frameworks and models to help universities and policy makers understand the role and contribution of higher education to local and regional development. However, these models have failed to fully reflect (or give insufficient attention to) the impact of the regional context (economic, social, political), the policy environment for higher education and territorial development and the diversity of management and leadership structures of universities themselves. This has led to the development of static models that rarely work outside of the immediate context in which they were developed and therefore risk leading to design of policies that are not fit for purpose.

This Policy Expo gathered evidence from RSA members in Europe, South America, Africa, Asia and Australia to develop a new approach to thinking about university-region collaboration that could be adapted to the specificity of institutional and local contexts. In this webinar we will present our Policy Expo, describe the new tool we have developed to support policy makers to understand their higher education partners and serve as a framework to guide practical action, and share conclusions and policy recommendations.
In this session, panellists discuss how cities and regions can build, embed and reshape global value chains (GVCs) to their enhancement and technological upgrading. The session aims to contribute to wider discussions on regional innovation and smart specialisation strategies and in particular on the role regional governments can play in leading the co-creation and capture of value opportunities.

Global connectivity and GVCs take centre stage in the post 2020 EU Cohesion Policy and are more important than ever for recovery after the pandemic. This session will offer the opportunity of a rigorous discussion of this emerging topic that has been rarely analysed at the regional level.

The session will also be an opportunity to present a new RSA Policy Impact Book that offers an extensive coverage of these debates for everyone interested in a practical critical review and analysis of this ‘hot’ policy topic. RSA members will receive a hard copy and can access the book online when published.
He explores his contention that who can belong in our cities will ultimately determine what our cities can become. He illustrates his ideas with examples from urban planning and design, food justice and the ‘Minneapolis Paradox’.
Transportation networks underpin urban mobility. In turn, spatial network analysis has emerged as an important frontier in urban informatics as more data are collected about transportation networks’ form and utilization. However, the tools to model and analyze these networks are too often inaccessible, atheoretical, or otherwise limiting. This talk discusses some of the foundations and recent trends in this field, highlighting the growing connections between urban data science, network science, and transportation planning. It argues for open-source software and reusable computational data science as keys to both link and advance these disciplines for better science and practice.
As global populations become more urbanized, wealth distribution more inequitable, and climate change impacts more severe, the pressure on our interconnected natural and synthetic infrastructural systems to maintain basic quality of life standards grows more and more intense. Infrastructural optimism is the concept that a more socially equitable and ecologically intact future is paramount to the universal right to the city and can be more readily produced through collaborative design and planning utilizing principles of infrastructural urbanism and strategies of infrastructural opportunism. If infrastructural optimism is the luxury of reinvention in the already fertile soil of progressive political leadership, supportive agencies, engaged and willing residents, and abundant financial backing, infrastructural opportunism – leveraging large infrastructure investment for greater social and environmental gains – is the vehicle through which more challenged contexts have the chance to equalize that footing.

Based on research primarily centred in US regions and megaregions, but applicable more broadly, this presentation shares two infrastructural opportunism case studies: the interstate 11 (I11) Supercorridor in the Southwest megaregion of the US and the Northside-Southside MetroLink light rail line in the midwest US city of St. Louis, Missouri. Offering sharply contrasting geographic and demographic conditions, these two projects are utilized as sites for interdisciplinary urban design students and research partners to collaborate with real-world project stakeholders to help shift the paradigm away from predictable and resource-intensive solutions towards next generation infrastructure.
There exists a number of disaster analysis streams that make use of input-output analysis. In this work, we are particularly interested in using input-output frameworks for investigating changes in consumption possibilities as a result of disaster-induced production shortfalls. We propose an improved disaster analysis approach, characterised by enabling spatial substitution, and by the ability to control for which parts of a multi-regional economy need to be shielded from the disaster.
More specifically, firstly we want to allow industries to substitute alternative inputs for reduced inputs. For example, industries may substitute unavailable inputs with imports of the identical product, or may use alternative technologies or materials.

Secondly, we want to be able to specify that a disaster shall affect some intermediate or final demanders less than others, and some not at all. For example, partial power blackouts should affect schools only temporarily, supermarkets and cool-store facilities even less, and hospitals not at all.

We apply our new approach to a case study: The consequences of Venezuela’s oil revenue plunge.
Recognising the importance of political action to achieve reform, this contribution draws on experiences with civil society initiated coalitions and alliances in urban Africa and Asia. Analysing their efforts to reduce poverty and inequality, I examine what has worked, suggest why it has worked, and identify challenges.

There is widespread acknowledgement of the need for urban reform by many disadvantaged constituencies living and working in towns and cities of the global South. Reform is also more widely recognised as required to address multiple city challenges such as responding to climate change, secure city-wide improvements in, for example, basic services such as water and sanitation and strengthening urban economies. Urban social movements that campaign for improved access to resources, protection from exploitation and abuse, and recognition have acknowledged the efficacy of working with broad-based alliances to achieve change. And the contribution of territorially-based reform coalitions as instigators of transformative change both within and beyond cities has also been more widely recognised.

Coalition building brings together those who recognise the potential of alliances to achieve common goals. In some cases, those involved create an organization to support their work; however, alliances also take the form of looser and less permanent aggregations. An analysis of inclusive urban transformation suggests that such coalitions have been important in strengthening narratives of poverty reduction, promoting more equitable policies for secure tenure and basic services, and helping to protect residents against exploitation and dispossession. Such alliances may be particularly important in highly stratified social contexts in which the legitimacy and capabilities of movements themselves are challenged.

This lecture seeks to answer the following questions:

What have we learned from the last 20 years of coalition building
Who are the key groups in coalitions, and why are they important?
How do coalitions change over time in their search for greater effectiveness?
How do coalitions work with the polity, political parties and politicians?
And finally what do coalitions offer to the work of the African Cities Research Consortium
'''Abstract'''

Motivated by a real situation arising in the Brazilian sugarcane industry, this paper addresses the integrated planning of harvest and transport operations over a multi-period planning horizon. The aim is to develop a schedule for the deployment of harvest and transport equipment that specifies the periods for the execution of the harvest operations on the sugarcane fields, and the type of harvesting machines and transport vehicles to be operated. These decisions are made subject to multiple constraints related to the projected crop yield, resource availability, demand for sugarcane at the mills, and further technical requirements specific to the harvest operations. The tactical plan to be determined minimizes the total cost incurred by the equipment used and the total time required to harvest all the fields. We propose a bi-objective mixed-integer non- linear programming model for this new problem. A computational study is conducted for test instances capturing the characteristics of a Brazilian milling company. Pareto-optimal solutions are identified by the Progressive Bounded Constraint Method that is extended to the problem at hand. A comparative analysis highlights the trade-offs between economic performance and harvest efficiency, thereby supporting the decision maker in making a more informed choice of the preferred tactical plan. Useful managerial insights are also provided into the profile of the harvest and transport resources that should be used under different weather conditions and work schedules.
'''Abstract'''

This article reviews existing literature and approaches to the current study of fashion and economic development to rethink the interconnection between creative producers and global production and trade networks in relation to sustainable local development. Focusing on the work of independent fashion designers on the African continent, we first consider their positioning as cultural (micro) entrepreneurs and drivers of economic development. Next, we discuss the wider relationship with the global markets and value chains which impact their work and local context. We conclude with a call for further interdisciplinary research that takes fashion designers as a key point from which to engage critically with global value chains beyond prioritising the lead firm in the global North, so as to position African fashion designers as micro-entrepreneurs with potential for value creation and as leading smaller local or national markets with concomitant international reach.
