Modeling is an art, but it is art guided by a rigorous mathematical framework that ensures that we get a well-defined problem that we can put on the computer and solve. This can be viewed as building a bridge from a messy, poorly defined real-world problem to something with the clarity a computer can understand.

This document develops a specific modeling process which is then illustrated using a range of problems. It uses a “teach by example” style where a series of carefully chosen problem settings are used to bring out different modeling and algorithmic devices
