The Department of Statistical & Actuarial Sciences (DSAS), School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences in the Faculty of Science at Western University is pleased to announce a search for a probationary (tenure-track) position in Actuarial Science at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The rank and salary will be commensurate with the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience. The anticipated start date will be 01 July 2018.
The successful candidate must have a PhD in an area of the actuarial, statistical or mathematical sciences or mathematical finance. The candidate must have attained the designation of Associate of the Society of Actuaries (SOA), or Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), or Associate of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA). Actuarial/insurance experience in industry and existing collaborations or interest in collaborations with industry will be an asset. This appointment requires that the successful candidate must be working towards becoming a Fellow of the SOA or CAS and CIA. The successful candidate will provide leadership in the DSAS Actuarial Science undergraduate and graduate programs.
The successful candidate must have the proven ability to develop an internationally recognised research program and with research accomplishments that are making major impact in the field as evidenced by top-tier international journal publications related to the broad areas of life and non-life insurance as well as reinsurance.These research outputs could also include innovative applications to actuarial science of results from allied fields, such as, but not limited to, probability and statistics, computing and numerical analysis, mathematical finance and economics, management science, and quantitative risk management.
The position requires a demonstrated capacity to obtain external funding, dedicated commitment to high-quality undergraduate and graduate teaching, and ability to develop timely and innovative courses at all levels. In addition to possessing excellent communication skills, the successful candidate must have a record of attracting and supervising graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows.
The Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences (http://www.uwo.ca/stats) offers an exceptional environment for interdisciplinary research, teaching, and training in statistics and its applications. It has some 325 undergraduate students and about 60 graduate students pursuing degree programs in actuarial science, financial modelling, and statistics; and supported by 23 faculty members. The Department is actively involved in a collaborative professional Masters in Financial Economics program jointly offered with Economics, Law, and Business. It recently introduced an undergraduate program in Data Science and a professional graduate program in Data Analytics. It also mounts a Collaborative Program in Biostatistics together with the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry.
The Department is one of the three independent departments together with a research unit constituting the newly formed School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences. The School’s vision is to make Western the place to be for study and research in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, and the Statistical & Actuarial Sciences in the 21st century.
